Description
Gibraltar Point Lighthouse, located on the Toronto Islands, is one of Toronto's oldest landmarks. Built in 1808, the lighthouse has a rich history and has been the subject of various local legends. The red door in the image is a part of this historic structure, which served to guide ships navigating the waters of Lake Ontario.
The lighthouse, constructed of limestone, stands at approximately 82 feet tall and is known for its distinctive conical shape. It ceased operations in 1958 but remains a popular attraction for visitors to the Toronto Islands. The lighthouse is also associated with the tale of its first keeper, J.P. Rademuller, who is said to have mysteriously disappeared in 1815, leading to stories of hauntings.
The structure and its surroundings offer a glimpse into Toronto's maritime history and provide a picturesque spot for visitors exploring the islands.
