Description
A lone bare tree stands tall in the lush Monet Gardens on a beautiful sunny day in Giverny, France.
The Giverny settlement has existed for many hundreds of years, as shown by archeological finds dating back to the early 1st century AD. In ancient deeds, the town is known as "Warnacum", and has remained a small rural setting in terms of permanent population, although there's been a boom in tourism since the restoration of Monet's house and gardens.
Claude Monet first noticed the village while looking out of a train window; he decided to move there, and rented a house and the area surrounding it. He eventually purchased the house and land in 1890 and set out to create the gardens that he wanted to paint, and that the land is now famous for. Some of his most famous paintings were of his garden, including the water lilies and Japanese bridge.
The property was left to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1966 by Monet's son, and became a museum open to the public in 1980 after a large-scale restoration.
