Description
An interior view of the Opera House within the Palace of Versailles in France.
Inaugurated in 1770 during the reign of Louis XV and considered one of the greatest works of architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel, the Royal Opera was, at the time, the largest concert hall in Europe. The excellent acoustics of the opera house are partly due to its interior decoration being constructed almost entirely of wood; it is painted to resemble marble in a technique known as faux marble.
