Description
Rock formations jut out of the Atlantic Ocean at the volcanic black sand beach of Reynisfjara near the small town of Vik in Iceland during a beautiful sunset.
This picture was taken in October 2016 while on vacation with a friend. One of our bus tours took us to this place, and I really didn't know what to expect since I hadn't researched it beforehand. This is not a swimmable beach - of course, it being in Iceland and in October, I hadn't planned on swimming anyway. The rock formations were cool, but what I found really neat was the reason you don't swim here. If you were to stand on the shore and look directly south, there would be not a single mass of land between you and Antarctica. That's maybe 15000 kilometres of nothing but water. Because of that, there's nothing in the way to break up or weaken the currents or undertow, so you could easily get swept out into the ocean. And many people have, at least according to our tour guide.
