Description
A view looking out onto the Rideau Canal, standing on the locks at the ghost town of Andrewsville, Ontario.
The Rideau Canal, measuring 202 kilimetres long, connects Canada's capital city of Ottawa, Ontario to Lake Ontario and the St.Lawrence River at Kingston. The canal system uses sections of two rivers, the Rideau and the Cataraqui, as well as several lakes. Originally opened in 1832 as a precaution in case of war with the United States, it remains in use today primarily for pleasure boating, with most of its structures still intact. It's the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America, and in 2007 was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This particular view is from Lock 19 (Upper Nicholsons), just down the street from the ghost town of Andrewsville. It was this town that originally brought me to the area - I had no idea the lock was here. The town, started in 1843, had the misfortune to be bypassed by the railways. By the 1890s, it was on the decline. Today all that remains of Andrewsville are a few original homes, still occupied, the lock station and remains of the old dam.
